Disney Earth Breaks Record for Opening Day Documentary

DisneyNature’s Earth has broken the records for opening day for a documentary in film history.

The DisneyNature production netted $4 million for its first day of release in 1,804 US cinemas, according to Variety.

The documentary, directed by Alastair Fothergill, is the first film made under Disney’s new studio. Disneynature was formed a year ago to get the company back into the practice of making nature movies, a staple in its filmmaking lineup since 1948’s Seal Island.

The division is based in France and headed up by Jean-Francois Camilleri. It reportedly plans to build on its recent box office success with March Of The Penguins, which brought in $77.4m domestically.

The highest-grossing documentary ever in the US is Fahrenheit 9/11 with $119.1 million. With such a large opening on a Wednesday, it’s possible that the Disney Earth Movie could break the record for highest-grossing documentary.

Just like Al Gore shook us up with his painfully honest and cleverly presented documentary-movie “An inconvenient truth”, directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield also remind us that it’s about time to improve our way of life in order to save our beautiful planet. “Planet earth” is also a wake-up call that the global warming of our planet has disastrous consequences for all living creatures around the world. Al Gore showed us the bleak future of planet Earth by presenting hard facts backed up by documented examples through long yet always interesting monologues. The creators of this documentary choose a different yet equally powerful way to accomplish this. They do not present us with a future representation of what might occur to our planet if we don’t radically change things around, but they rather show us the genuine beauty of planet Earth in all of its amazing glory. We see places that we knew that existed but never thought they could be so beautiful. In this movie, we see a wide array of the most extraordinary places such as forsaken deserts, giant forests full of fauna and flora and icy-landscapes as far as the eye could see. And in all of those immensely different environments, we see the most beautiful animals trying to survive.

This is exactly the kind of movie that had to be made, in combination with the one from Al Gore, in order to make us realize that our planet is too precious to meddle with. The voice-over by Patrick Stewart is always relaxing and thus very well done although at first it sounded as though I was watching an X-men movie instead! The cinematography is probably the most remarkable thing of this documentary. At times: what you see is so unreal that you tend to forget that a man with a camera actually had to film all of that delightful footage.

In short: This is definitely a must-see for everyone since it concerns every single person on this beautiful planet Earth! The truth is: I never thought our planet was so astonishingly beautiful!

You can watch the first webisode from Disney Earth called “Heritage”. The film uses footage shot for the original BBC Earth series that was never used. So the film is original stuff that you haven’t seen before, but the actual footage was shot previously.

Disney Earth Review: Breathtaking - But Not Educational Enough?

Disney usually gears its movies toward children, but some critics are not certain that DisneyNature’s Earth film falls into this category. The movie premieres on Earth Day, April 22nd.

The movie could be stressful for children, as it follows the lives of three animal families. It is not easy going for any of the animals: two adult polar bears and their baby cubs; a baby elephant and its mother; a young humpback whale and its mother. All face the treachery of Nature as they search for food and water.

The whales need to beware the potential attack of a great white shark as they migrate from the tropics to Antarctica in search of krill. Though the shark never attacks them, the footage of a Great White jumping 32 feet into the air as it devours a seal is absolutely spine-tingling. On screen, the Great White seems as big as a T-Rex. Clearly, in the ocean, it is just as deadly.

The gorgeous blue waters the whales ply contrast starkly with the ghostly, parched African desert the elephants must cross to reach drinking water in the Okavango delta. The baby and its mother manage to dodge the hungry jaws of a pride of starving lions - but one of their companions is not so lucky. At several points during their arduous journey, the little one, blinded by dust storms and weary from lack of food, appears on the verge of collapse. An aerial shot of the spreading desert and the shrinking Okavango leaves the disturbing impression that, even if the elephants make it this time, they may not be so lucky in the future.

The polar bear cubs couldn’t be cuter as they emerge from their den to a snow day every child can relate to. But miles away, their father struggles to find food. Polar bears use ocean ice as “hunting platforms” to snag seals. But as climate change melts ice faster, it is becoming harder and harder for the bears to find food. Papa bear eventually must take to land to avoid drowning. His desperate attempt to kill a walrus backfires as the walrus spears him with his tusk.

The cinematography is breathtaking, especially the shots of thousands of birds in flight. The filmmakers worked from hot air balloons and helicopters fitted with specially-made stabilized cameras to capture their subjects as they exist in the wild. One of the side stories in the film shows baby mandarin ducks emerging from the hole in a tree high above the ground that served as their nest. Each one tests its tiny wings in the same way: it leaps into the air, flaps a few times, and falls soundly to the ground - fortunately into a cushioning pile of leaves. It’s absolutely adorable.

The film leaves no doubt about the beauty and value of Nature. But it makes almost no mention of the threats the natural world faces due to pollution or toxic chemicals, beyond some slight, passing references to climate change as the polar ice melts and as the desert spreads. This seems like a lost opportunity. The survival of all the animals featured in “Earth” is in question due to the impact people are having on the planet. The filmmakers made a beautiful movie - but they could have made an important one if they’d included information on how the audience affects the lives of the subjects on screen — and what they can do to make a difference.

Disney Earth Movie Gets Good Reviews

Disney’s Earth movie is getting good reviews from the press. Disney’s Earth documentary will arrive in theaters on April 22nd. The movie begins in the North Pole, slowly working its way across the world.

Disney Earth required more than 2,000 hours in the field in 42 different countries. The film is stunning, including aerial shots of thousands of migrating caribou, close-ups of cute and cuddling bears, and fast-forward film of the changing of the seasons. Some of the shots are so amazing that you feel that they had to have been computer generated; but they weren’t.

But this isn’t your typical documentary. Interwoven in the amazing shots is humor, danger, and passion. Don’t ask us how, you just have to see the movie. (We don’t want to spoil it!) Like any Disney movie, of course, it ends happily.

NYT: Disney Earth Balances Cuddliness and Reality

The New York Times has posted its Disney Earth movie review for the upcoming movie. The movie is set to be released on Earth Day (April 22nd).

A baby elephant is separated from its mother and dies. A cheetah eats a peppy little gazelle. The father of two cuddly polar bear cubs bleeds to death after a close encounter with a walrus tusk. Such scenes would not stand out in a standard wildlife documentary. But Disney Earth Movie is not routine: This G-rated movie heralds the Walt Disney Company’s high-profile return to the nature genre and presents it with a difficult balancing act.

Disneynature is Disney’s new film label that is meant to capture some of the “green” movie market the has sprung to life. It’s goal is to produce the next generation of nature documentaries. The film is narrated by James Earl Jones and consists of footage from the Planet Earth miniseries. The film focuses on three animal families as they try to survive.

Disney, because of its huge influence on children and culture, is a target for criticism no matter how carefully it fashions its entertainment, and is trying to walk a line cautiously with “Earth.” The company wants to depict nature in an unflinching manner, partly to attract top-notch documentarians to future projects and partly to foster environmental awareness.

Disneynature has carefully edited the film in order to keep its G-rating and not scare children. The baby elephant dies off camera and the audience is simply led to believe that the cheetah ate it.

But the success of “Planet Earth” could actually prove a stumbling block for “Earth,” as the Disney project contains a large amount of repackaged footage from the Discovery Channel mini-series. Indeed, about 60 percent of “Earth” has already been shown repeatedly, free, on Discovery Channel. A sequence in “Earth” showing great white sharks breaching as they feed on sea lions, for instance, will be familiar to anyone who has seen “Planet Earth.” “It’s a totally different way of seeing the footage,” Mr. Camilleri said, brushing off concerns about repetition. “To see that great white on the movie screens of today is truly astonishing.”
